In The Witcher’s third season, our beloved protagonists find themselves scattered across the vast expanse of the Continent. A precarious truce between Nilfgaard and Redania is shattered, the powerful sorceress stronghold of Aretuza lies in ruins, and chaos threatens to disrupt the delicate balance. Yennefer now assumes the mantle of leadership left vacant by the late Tissaia, while Geralt tirelessly searches for Ciri, who has been forced into hiding upon uncovering the dark secrets behind her cataclysmic abilities.
The trio’s paths converge in their pursuit of Vilgefortz, a cunning sorcerer responsible for fabricating multiple impostor Ciris, manipulating the magical conclave into senseless conflict, and annihilating any hope of averting war. Sporting a new facial scar from his fire magic, Vilgefortz aligns himself with Emperor Emhyr in Nilfgaard, likely intending to keep a close watch on Ciri.
With the Continent plunged into all-out war, Geralt faces even greater challenges in his quest to find his former ward. Accompanied by his loyal friend Jaskier and the skilled archer Milva, Geralt’s political neutrality is cast aside as he takes a stand against Nilfgaard. However, his exact allegiance to Redania or Cintra remains uncertain. Meanwhile, Jaskier’s affection for the Redanian prince Radovid complicates matters further, as Radovid ascends to the throne with the help of sorceress Philippa’s last-minute machinations. This unexpected development dashes Radovid’s dreams of leaving his kingdom to explore the world alongside Jaskier, foreshadowing an emotional confrontation between the two.
In the midst of it all, Ciri seeks refuge among a band of street thieves known as the Rats, residing in the Nilfgaardian province of Geso. Concealing her true identity, she adopts the name Falka, inspired by the infamous revolutionary who waged war and murdered her own kin in pursuit of her birthright. Ciri’s burgeoning powers lead her down a perilous path, leaving us to wonder whether she will succumb to the violence inherent in her magic. Additionally, the enigmatic transdimensional elves of the Wild Hunt make a brief appearance, showing interest in Ciri’s unique abilities. One thing is certain: Ciri’s connection with her unicorn companion will play a vital role in the unfolding events.
Apart from the narrative, an unexpected real-world twist adds another layer of intrigue. Prior to the season’s premiere, Netflix revealed a significant recasting decision—Henry Cavill would step down from the role of Geralt, making way for Liam Hemsworth to take on the iconic character. The reasons behind this change remain uncertain, with fans speculating on creative differences between Cavill and the show’s writers, as well as their adherence to the source material by Polish author Andrej Sapkowski.
